Tell us about your background, and how you came to found your company?
I moved to Hong Kong and began my career at investment bank Goldman Sachs soon after graduating from the UBC Sauder School of Business. I grew up in Vancouver, Canada, but by the time I finished school, I had already studied as an exchange student in Japan and Korea. Later in my career, I have had opportunities to work in China, and so I speak 5 languages, including English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese and Korean.
Ever since I was a child, and especially after living in Japan in high school, my passion has been in understanding and building relationships with people with different personalities and from different cultures. I think human beings and what makes us tick – the complexity of how we think and feel, the reasons behind how we react and the motivations and concerns driving the decisions we make and the actions we take – are fascinating.
To this end, I completed further studies. To name a few, I was the first Asia approved trainer of renowned psychologist and research scientist Dr. Paul Ekman's Emotional Intelligence, Micro Expressions and Lie Detection training programs. I also completed a certified program by the Emotional Intelligence Academy in "Behavioural Analysis & Investigative Interviewing." It was an honour also to learn from Dr. BJ Fogg, a world-leading authority on Behavior Design and the Founder & Director of the Stanford University Behavior Design Lab, as a student of his certified program in "Persuasion."
Throughout the years, from my time at Goldman Sachs, universities, including Peking University and Tsinghua University in China, have regularly invited me to speak to groom their leaders of the future, from their undergrad students to their MBA executives and leaders. This is how I first developed my passion for helping people through public speaking and coaching.
The satisfaction I get from helping people use Emotional Intelligence to improve and transform themselves - guiding them to understand more about themselves and the people around them; inspiring them to open their eyes to their potential, to the many unrealized options and choices in front of them - this has given me the energy and motivation to run my consulting business over the past 10 years.
What is most important to you and your organization – mission, vision, or core values? Why?
I would say Mission – helping people achieve self-actualization through 'Emotional Intelligence to Transform Your Life for Joy and Success.’ No matter what the topic is, from Emotional Intelligence to skills-based training such as Email Writing, self-awareness and awareness of others' thoughts and feeling form the foundation of what we teach. It's a journey not only to understand and influence others but to understand and influence yourself, to make conscious choices that support your success and happiness, to make decisions you won't regret.
We are also clear that other than our Mission and Values, we are to serve our clients. Because each individual and organisational client is unique and has its unique Mission, we design our services to serve our clients' Mission. We take the time to understand each client's needs, concerns, situation, and wants so that we can meet and exceed theirs and their stakeholders' expectations to make our working relationship a successful one.

How has the industry been changing in recent years?
The trend in the past few years has been moving towards online training; the current pandemic has only hastened this switch to online learning. But as human beings, we are emotional creatures, and online can never truly replace in-person interaction – I always tell people it's the difference between attending a live concert and watching it on DVD. Once the current pandemic is over, I expect that while online services will be very much the norm, direct human interaction will be even more precious.
What makes you different from what’s currently available in the market?
I don't teach pure skills or theory. The foundation for everything I teach is Emotional Intelligence, and I layer on top practical learnings. Each topic I speak or train on is a lesson in how the people – both yourself and others - think and feel – and how to apply that to the practical topics to achieve greater success and better relationships.
For example, our course "How to Write Emails that People Will Read and Respond To" is a course on Influence and Impact – in writing. You can only effectively influence and impact people if you first understand how they, and you, think and feel, and apply that to your written communications in a practical, effective way.
What does the future hold for your company?
Currently, my team and I are working on rolling out some of our most popular courses online, including "How to Read the Mind of the Interviewer to Get a Job Offer," and "How to Write Emails That People Will Read and Respond To."
We are also devoting more resources to offering in-person and online coaching services for individuals, including emotional management, career and interview skills coaching, life coaching and executive leadership coaching.
